How do i burn a movie to a dvd?

i have a movie on my laptop which is an avi file. i then converted it using avs video converter to convert it to dvd. It then asked if i wanted to burn it to a dvd, i said yes, it went through the lengthy process and at the end it didnt work for some reason. i've also tried using windows dvd maker and cheetah dvd burner, and when i click burn, they automatically stop working. In my videos folder i have a folder that says the movie title and then splits it into disc 1 and disc 2 folders. Each disc folder has another folder named AUDIO_TS, which is empty and one named VIDEO_TS, which has numerous files in it. The actual movie segments in the video folders are in VOB format, which means the conversion was successful i guess. the other files in the video folder are IFO and BUP files. I dont know what those are really. Anyway, i want to burn the movie to a dvd so i can play it in a dvd player, how do i do that?
